The Society recognises excellence in hydrology, and encourages participation by hydrologists in its organisation and operation, by offering several awards and prizes:

  • Society Prize - awarded at the biennial National Hydrology Symposium for the best paper and presentation.

  • Penman Lecture - held at the National Hydrology Symposium to allow an eminent speaker to give a keynote address to the Society. [past lecturers]
  • President's Prize - awarded biennially in recognition of a formative paper, report or work which has advanced hydrology significantly. [past winners]

  • Young Person's Prize - awarded for the best paper and presentation at the annual Postgraduate Symposium.

  • Annual Student Award - awarded for the best undergraduate dissertation(s) in hydrology submitted by university departments.

  • Honorary Membership - awarded for life to recognise the contribution of eminent hydrologists either at home or overseas to the practice of hydrological science or engineering, or to reward the outstanding contribution of a BHS member to the work of the Society. [list of honorary members]

  • Travel grants are awarded from the Society’s general funds to support members attending conferences. Applicants should have been members for at least 6 months. Priority is given to members under 35 or retired from employment, who are presenting papers and who have not previously received support from BHS. Recipients of grants are expected to submit a report on their visit for publication in the BHS newsletter Circulation. Travel grant applications should be made to the Hon. Treasurer at least two months before the conference/meeting.

The Society also administers the Exeter Fund, income from which is used to support members’ attendance at international assemblies of the IAHS or its parent body the IUGG. The deadline for applications to the Exeter Fund by those wishing to attend the biennial IAHS International Symposium will be published in Circulation.
