Membership analysis

Academic background

When the membership was last surveyed, about a third came from civil engineering, a third from geography and a third from other disciplines (e.g. environmental science, physics, mathematics, geology).

Work environment

Members work mainly in engineering hydrology, scientific hydrology, hydro-ecology, hydrogeology, hydrometeorology, water resources planning, analysis and operation, flood forecasting and hydrometry.

Work locations

The major employers of members are:

  • Environment agencies
  • Consultancy
  • Water utilities
  • Research institutions and universities

Whilst 50% of the membership work wholly in the UK, a significant proportion do at least some work overseas, and approximately 8% of members live overseas.

The UK-based membership is distributed throughout the country and the Society tries hard to be accessible to its members by balancing the locations of its national meetings (including its symposia and international conferences) between London and other parts of the country, and by running many regional meetings.
