How to join

Membership is open to all individuals who are actively interested in hydrology.

The subject of hydrology embraces a wide range of interests, including scientific, applied and engineering applications. The BHS is an inter-disciplinary body which aims to cater for the needs of hydrologists and all those interested in the subject.

Benefits of membership

Members receive the quarterly newsletter Circulation and are encouraged to attend national and regional meetings, for which they will usually pay a significantly lower fee. New members receive the society’s handbook, updated periodically with changes to the statutes, and a directory of members.

Members enjoy access to reduced-rate personal subscriptions to two leading international journals:

  • Hydrological Processes
Published by Wiley in 26 issues per year from 2007, the personal subscription for BHS members is £120: application form here.

  • Hydrology and Earth System Sciences (HESS)
Published as six issues per year by the European Geosciences Union and since 2005 as a free-access internet journal. The member discount provides printed issues of the journal at the reduced rate of €250 per annum.

How to join

BHS annual subscription fees for 2007 are £25 for individual membership and £12.50 for full-time students and retired (non-earning) members.

A joining fee of £5 is payable, but this is waived if new members sign up to pay future subscriptions by direct debit.

Life membership is available for a single payment of £400. There is no corporate membership. Honorary (life) membership is awarded to a few very distinguished hydrologists and for outstanding service to the Society (see list of Honorary Members here).

The membership application form may be downloaded here in Adobe Acrobat Portable Document Format (PDF). Right-click to save the target file, print it out, fill it in and send it to the address below.

Alternatively to be sent an application form by post, please contact Tim Fuller at the Institution of Civil Engineers, 1-7 Great George Street, London SW1P 3AA, Tel: 0207 665 2234, Fax: 0207 799 1325, Email: bhs@ice.org.uk
